Complete Fission Track dating facilities are available at the FU Berlin. We have a fully equipped mineral separation laboratory for concentrating apatite and zircon. Facilities for mounting, polishing, and etching samples are in collaboration with University of Potsdam. We host a Zeiss © Axioplan 2 microscope with a maximum magnification of 1250 x paired with a Drawing Board VI ©, stage control, LED courser mouse and the FT Stage © software for counting and length measurements. Data record and …

The Geochemistry group is equipped with clean laboratory facilities used for low-blank sample preparation and element separation for isotope abundance measurements and concentration determinations of different elements in rock samples and minerals. Pre-filtered air using various pre-filters and HEPA (H13) filters are employed as well as a slight overpressure, compared to the outside air, to produce clean-lab conditions. Our Clean Laboratory (a total of ca. 105 m²) consists of two separate …

Here we perform high-temperature and high-pressure digestions:

    • Parr pressure vessels,
    • Borosilicate glass Carius tubes at 220-250 °C and 320 °C (reverse aqua regia for Re-Os, PGE, Au),
    • Quartz glass vessels in high-pressure asher HPA-S up to 320 °C (reverse aqua regia for Re-Os, PGE, Au),
    • Glassy carbon vessels in high-pressure asher HPA-S up to 260 °C (HF-HNO₃).

Dredging is a process for the extraction of microfossils. Here, fossils larger than 0.063 mm (nanofossils) and smaller than about 2.0 mm (macrofossils) are extracted as sieve residue of a sediment sample. The finer sediment is rinsed away with running water.

The Laboratory hosts four laboratory chamber furnaces of type K114 up to 1100 °C from Heraeus - Thermo Science. Additionally there are two high temperature furnaces type HTRV 70-250 up to 1600 °C from Gero. And it also contains two high temperature furnaces type HT 04/17 up to 1750 °C from Nabertherm.

Our laboratories include clean and conventional chemistry and sample preparation labs, a state-of-the-art multi-collector thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS), and a sector-field inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (SF-ICPMS). Additional analytical facilities in the institute we use include gas source mass spectrometry, electron microprobe, scanning electron microscopy and X-Ray diffraction. The Geochemistry Research Facilities are a laboratory complex and consist of several …

ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry) or plasma source mass spectrometry represents the most sensitive and flexible method for the analysis of mass fractions of trace elements in geomaterials (rocks, minerals, water) and in chemical or technical products. The advantage of the method lies in the nearly complete ionization of many elements, which is achieved by using argon plasma at temperatures of up to 7000 °C and fast data acquisition. The Thermo Electron Element XR in the AB …
