Description

For the thermal decomposition of organic matter different pyrolysis techniques are applied. They are used in combination with different gas chromatographic methods such as gas chromatography, gas chromatography mass spectrometry and gas chromatography flame ionization detection.
Pyrolysis in combination with GC-MS or GC-FID has the following applications: kerogen characterization, identification of depositional environments of petroleum source rocks, characterization of crude oil, asphaltenes, prediction of petroleum characteristics, bulk kinetics of hydrocarbon generation, compositional kinetics of oil and gas generation under natural conditions, thermal stability of macromolecular organic matter, prediction of oil to gas transformation, and formation of CO₂, CO, H₂ etc. from macromolecular organic matter.
Thermovaporization in combination with GC-MS or GC-FID is applied for whole oil characterization, analysis of volatile hydrocarbons in source rock bitumens and crude oil, characterization of natural gases in source rock, bitumens quantification of source rock bitumens.
TDU/pyrolysis is applied for the analysis of volatile hydrocarbons and aromatics in solids and oils as well as polymer analysis to establish characterization pyrogramms.
